There is an electric trolley that climbs the cobble-stoned streets of Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro. For a seat, you pay about twenty cents, but it's free if you just grab a pole on the side and hang on for your life. It winds through the heat past local pubs, restaurants, and shanties. The wires that feed it electricity mingle with laundry lines and kite strings. It is antique public transport through one of the funkiest places on earth - the neighborhood that inspired many of the great sambas. It was here, under the armpit of Christ the Redeemer, that Tom Armstrong
created the sound of King Frydai: a mixture of seven-string guitar, beats,
Brazilian percussion, keys, bass, and drums supporting down-tempo songs.
King Frydai is an expression of international sub-culture. |
